AI Strategy
The marketing world has a new acronym problem.
The Real Problem with AEO, GEO, LLMO, and AI SEO Is Not the Name. It Is That Nobody Is Measuring Anything.
The marketing world has a new acronym problem.
AEO. GEO. LLMO. AI SEO. Depending on which newsletter landed in your inbox this morning, you might have encountered all four before your first meeting. Each one claims to be the definitive framework for the same uncomfortable truth: AI is changing how people search, how answers get surfaced, and how brands get found.
And most marketing teams are still watching from the sidelines, unsure what to track, what to fix, or where to even start.
Here is the thing, though. The confusion in terminology is not really the problem. It is a symptom of something bigger.
The industry has no standard way to measure visibility in AI search. And without measurement, there is no strategy. Just noise.
Why Traditional SEO Metrics No Longer Tell the Full Story
For the better part of two decades, search visibility was relatively straightforward to measure. Rankings. Impressions. Click-through rates. You knew where you stood because the signals were clear and the platforms were transparent.
AI search does not work that way.
When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini, or Microsoft Copilot a question about your category, there is no ranking report waiting for you on the other side. There is no position one. There is just an answer. And your brand is either in it, referenced by it, or invisible to it.
Traditional SEO tools were not built for this. They measure the old game while a new one is being played.
That is the gap that AEO, GEO, and LLMO are all trying to name. But naming the gap is not the same as measuring it.
What the Debate Is Really Telling You
AEO, Answer Engine Optimization, was the first serious attempt to frame this shift. It came out of the voice search era and focused on structuring content to be surfaced as a direct answer. It is a legitimate framework and still relevant today.
GEO, Generative Engine Optimization, came next as large language models changed the landscape further. It focuses specifically on visibility within AI-generated responses, which is a more precise and more current framing.
LLMO, Large Language Model Optimization, goes a layer deeper, looking at how the models themselves perceive, reference, and recommend your brand across different contexts and queries.
Each term captures something real. The reason the debate keeps going is that none of them come attached to a clear, standardized metric. You can optimize for all three and still have no idea whether it is working.
That is the problem worth solving.
GVI: Podium IQ's Answer to the Measurement Gap
At Podium IQ, we built GVI, the Generative Visibility Index, to answer that question. A standardized score designed specifically to measure how visible your brand is inside AI-generated answers.
Not rankings. Not impressions. Actual presence inside the responses that AI models are serving to your potential customers right now.
Your GVI Score tells you:
Where your brand appears across the major AI platforms, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot. How often are you being referenced relative to your competitors? What context your brand appears in, and whether it is accurate and favorable. Where the gaps are and what content or signals need to change to close them.
This is the intelligence that AEO, GEO, and LLMO have all been pointing toward. A single, actionable score that tells you where you stand in the AI search era and what to do about it.
The Brands Pulling Ahead Are Already Measuring
The organizations gaining ground in AI search right now are not the ones that mastered the vocabulary first. They are the ones who started measuring before their competitors did.
Because measurement changes everything. It turns a vague anxiety about AI search into a specific, workable problem. It gives your team something to act on. It creates a baseline so you can see whether your efforts are moving the needle.
Without it, you are optimizing blind.
Find Out Where You Stand
The terminology will sort itself out. AEO or GEO, LLMO or AI SEO, the industry will eventually land on a common language. There will be a conference track named after it and a certification course behind it.
But the brands that know their GVI Score today will not be waiting for that moment.
They will already be ahead.
